They had escaped from the Mutant Response Division ran medical facility. All of them, Erik and his Brotherhood along with Kate. The MRD had fought hard to keep the Brotherhood from leaving and to conceal their secrets. There had been injuries but Kate had healing abilities. She was able to keep some from dying or worse.
Of course, she was going to go with him. There were no other options for her. She had tried to get back to being on her own. That action had resulted in her being captured and tortured in the name of science. Kate was in no hurry to go through that again. She was not in a hurry to do anything.
Kate had been quiet on the trip back to Erik's base.
Where that was she didn't know precisely. It was downtown, she could tell that much. The architecture looked old and run down. There were abandoned lots nearby but there destination was none of those. They were going underground in a sprawling complex of connected basements and tunnels. The buildings were old though some construction was more recent than others. It was possible that his base was not located on any current blueprint. It was safe, for now.
Having a task helped Kate somewhat. She checked on those that she had healed wanting to make sure they were well. She had also finished healing those who had been seriously injured. There was time enough then to finish. After that Kate had retreated.
She wanted to be left alone. She thought she needed time to process what she had been through. Kate found a corner and slunk down into it. Out of mind, out of sight or so she hoped. There was no desire in her to talk to anyone.
She sat with her back to the wall and her knees pressed to her chest. Sometimes, she would look at her hands. Some fingers were polished while others were not. Kate had the thought that if she cut them all off they would match. Her hands would go back to looking the same. In her mind she saw it, taking a knife and with a few quick chops, lobbing them all off. There would be pain but it would pass.
Kate wanted them to go back but was that enough? What else had they done to her?
Her breathing started to become labored. Her hands clinched and she dug her fingernails into her knees hard enough that the flesh on both grew white. She broke the skin and with a sharp intake of breath she let go. Kate drew her knees in closer to her chest and then buried her head.
She felt lost. No, she felt worse than lost. Kate was out of her depths with no idea of how to even begin searching for where she ought to be.
