Five drugs hung from the IV pole. The drugs were all different but all fed into a singular intravenous line. The drugs were metered by a machine. It beeped occasionally. The five different drugs had a total of one-hundred and twenty different permutations. Ordinarily, only one drug was needed to keep a person sedated. In this case, however, the woman being sedated was not ordinary.
Kate was a mutant who possessed a healing factor. Her healing factor protected her from many things. She recovered from wounds swiftly and was immune from most diseases and toxins. Her body could work through poisons and while she might be ill from the effects, those effects were only temporary.
The one-hundred and twenty different combination of drugs were needed to keep Kate under. Her heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory functions were monitored. If there was a change, a different combination was released.
The sedation was necessary now. Before she had been put under, they had taken samples. The situation and current holding facilities were not adequate to test all of her reactions to tests without sedation. Blood had been drawn, tissue samples taken, and a whole host of tests had been run. Those that had her did not want her to run away. Kate was secured to the hospital bed.
To outward observers, she looked like a patient. Every so often, someone checked in on her. However, she was housed in a secure ward. There was a guard nearby. With all of the restraints, it would have been easy to assume that Kate was a mental patient. Why else use all of the sedation and keep a guard?
To closer observers, something wasn't right. There was nothing written down on her chart. The nurses doing the checking did not stay in the room long enough to actually check anything. They walked in, they paused, and then they walked out. It wasn't normal procedures for any kind of patient.
Closer observers would find other anomalies. One ear was pierced, the other not. On her hands, seven out of ten fingers were manicured and had a coating of coral polish. Her thumb, pinky and pointer finger were absent color. They were all easily explained. There were no other traces of injuries. Who would believe foul play?
