↠ Canon Point: Post [community profile] dagaz, aka Throne of Shadows
Actual canon point from Marvel is a January 2006, just before M-Day.
↠ Reserve: here.

↠ Age: 24

↠ Appearance: Kate stands at an average height of five foot and seven inches. Her build is slim. She has brunette hair that she wears in long layers down to her shoulders. Currently, she has bangs. They fall just below her eyebrows. While she doesn't have the longest lashes, her eyes are a noticeable green.

She doesn't slouch when she's walking or sitting. A person could tell that Kate takes pride in her appearance. There is nothing sloppy about it (not even her casual or clean-the-house clothes). She likes to get dressed and style her hair.

As far as traits and ticks go, she is a bit persnickety. She likes things just so. Kate typically gives people her full attention. However, when she hears something she doesn't like her head tilts to the side. If she doesn't know how to respond, she looks away. The signs of something upsetting her or her being upset are subtle but they are there. When she's annoyed her lips form a thin line.

↠ Reference/History: Kate is an only child and was raised by her maternal grandparents in New York City. Her parents died in an automobile accident when she was an infant. Having no memories of them, she does not consider this an immense tragedy. She was loved, she was looked after. Kate was provided with all of the things a child needs to thrive and succeed, that it wasn't her own mother and father has never mattered much in her life. Her grandparents are viewed as her parental units.

The week she turned fourteen was one of the worst weeks in her life. The same week that she got her first period, her powers were triggered. It was the world's way of apologizing to her, she often liked to say. Congratulations, you're a woman now. Here are some powers to help make up for it. The only thing, however, was she didn't know it was her powers manifesting. Kate first thought she got the short end of the stick when it came to menstrual side effects.

There was a boy (as there sometimes is). His name was Derek and he was in the same grade a her. Their annoyance was mutual and they often had the same classes. One day in chemistry, Derek had played a prank on Kate. He switched her chemicals. Instead of bubbles forming, the contents of her beaker had exploded in white foam. It went everywhere. It landed on Kate, her classmates and her teacher. It was a mess. Her day continued to go downhill. Derek didn't let up. He followed her home. He teased her. He bullied her. When she finally arrived at her house, she had all that she could stand and she could stand no further. Upon being called a detested, childhood nickname (Soapy Cat), Kate turned. She belted Derek in the face just as her grandmother opened the door. Derek was sent home, Kate was sent to her room.

She went to bed early that night. Kate had a headache that would not quit. When she went to bed, it was a little past seven. When she woke up, it was nearly two in the morning.

She didn't just wake up. She was wide awake. Kate couldn't just sit still. She needed things to do. She started with her room, cleaning. She ended up in the kitchen, baking. Her head did not bother her when she left for school that morning. A headache developed not long after. Kate had no way of knowing but each time she touched someone, she was letting them borrow her healing abilities. There was no way for her to control it. By the time she reached her house, her headache had progressed to a migraine. Kate went to bed early. She woke obscenely early.

It was a pattern that repeated itself for weeks before her grandparents caught on. Kate confessed to the headaches and feeling strange. It was off to the doctor for testing. The first few tests brought up nothing unusual. On the contrary, Kate was in excellent health. Still, she kept getting horrible headaches and it was starting to interfere with her schoolwork. The tests became more invasive. They tested her DNA and that was how her x-gene was discovered.

At first, her grandparents kept her status as a mutant secret. They did care that she was a mutant. Not everyone felt the same about the x-gene. Kate had no visible mutations. It could be kept secret if a doctor (who had a daughter at Kate's school) had not ran his mouth. Kate was expelled. They used the prank pulled on her in chemistry class as the excuse.

A week and a half after her expulsion, she was invited to attend a school. It was in New York, about an hour outside of Westchester. It was a private school called Xavier's School for the Gifted and Kate would be welcome there. It was a safe haven for mutants like her. She could get an education and learn how to control her powers (just as soon as they figured that out).

They did tests and experiments. It was purely by chance that she sliced her finger clear to the bone when slicing carrots for a salad. It hurt. It hurt a lot but it healed. It healed without a scar. There were more tests. The reason for her headaches became clear. When she touched someone, she was letting them borrow her healing powers temporarily. Now that the cause was revealed, Kate could work on controlling them. She was careful about touching and she practiced on plant stems. Eventually, the headaches faded.

At Xavier's, Kate was never on the hero track. Yes, she did have challenges in the Danger Room and was on a squad. Her codename was Remedy. However, the Danger Room challenges focused on teamwork, critical thinking, leadership, and problem solving skills. When it came time to graduate she didn't become an X-Men, Kate went to college instead.

Kate enrolled in NYU. After receiving a degree in Business Management with minors in the humanities, she choose to join the Paris branch of the X-Corporation. The X-Corporation had been organized by Professor Charles Xavier. Its purpose was to investigate mutant rights violations and help mutants in other ways. Its third purpose was to serve globally where the other X-Men could not. While there she helped mutants find jobs, find them a niche for their power set, help them fight discrimination and sometimes she helped in the field.

She could heal. Even if her powers were passive, Kate was useful in the field. That she could heal herself meant she could enter dangers that others could not. Kate did not go into the field often. There were others with greater skills and greater abilities.

However, Kate was good at her desk job (even if it was a glorified social worker). She could see the bigger picture when it came to someone needing help. In her three years there, she was promoted twice.

It must have been because, for a mutant, her life was fairly normal. Or perhaps her number had just come up on lottery for having adventures in the multiverse, Kate was plucked from her little desk job and transported through space and time only to be told she was a contestant on the Nysgood version of the Bachelor. The pool of contestants were varied and Kate ran into a few different people she recognized. Some, she got along with. There were a few (his name rhymed with cleric) that she did not get along with. She tried to keep a positive outlook. She had wanted to set a good example and be self-sacrificing. Sometimes, it caused her to come across as an asshole.

When she first arrived, she lived in a city under the sea. After that, the were transported to a dangerous wilderness area. There was no running water, electricity and the environment itself was out to get them. Her skills were expanded in some areas. She learned how to fence and her ability to make the most out of nothing grew. She has a lot of new uses for coconuts and bananas.

Rescue from the wilderness came in the form of a giant ship, the Egime. Kate was on that ship for some time. In ways, it was more difficult than the wilderness. There were no windows. The food that had been prepped for the journey, disappeared on them. The first three days on the ship were the most difficult. Having tasks and a schedule, helped keep Kate sane. More importantly, she had to keep busy. She was not a person who lived of a life of leisure or relaxing.

Eventually, the Egime made port and made more than one stop. Coincidentally, or perhaps not a coincidence at all, the Egime touched down in the City. She spent more money than she should have, she found out there were duplicates of Candidates living in the City but at the time, thought little about it.

When the Egime touched down for the last time, Kate (and the rest of the Candidates) were left in a pattern of holding. At Mannaz Hall, they had to wait. They had been recovered by the Nysgoods but were somewhat unsure of what to do with the Candidates (mostly due to a bunch of drama that happened before Kate arrived).

They had to rebuild again. The tasks of chores they had for themselves on the Egime did not translate very well. It was frustrating. They weren't so much as trusted with a shaving razor or kitchen knife. Worst yet, Kate was not allowed to cook meals in the kitchen. That task fell to servants who politely showed Kate the way out each time she tried to help.

↠ Personality: Kate presents herself as a femme feminist.

She was raised in a household that believed in manners and keeping hands idle free. One should hold open the door for the person following them in. One should be polite and offer to help. It does not harm anyone in making an effort not to be rude. Kate is polite and minds her manners, not because it’s expected, but because that’s who she is and how she was brought up. She was a Girl Scout and she was involved with sports. That was not enough, however. If her Grandmother was doing something, then so would Kate. That was viewed as a good time as any to learn. She grew up learning how to cook, bake and sew. She also tended the many gardens around the house which was how her love of flowers began.

That being said, she does not have difficulty in asserting herself. Kate will speak her mind when the situation calls for it. She is confident in her own abilities. She does not appreciate and cannot stand being discredited, dismissed or being rude to. Kate has a long memory for such grievances. She realizes that not everyone can or is able to stand up for themselves. She is sometimes interfering and sometimes comes across as a bit of an ass for doing so.

She likes to think that she knows a little bit about everything. (She’s wrong, however.) Kate calls herself a joan-of-all-trades but a master of a few. She is quick to come up with a suggestion that she believes (usually honestly) that will work. Some people might call it being a bossy boiler, an insufferable know-it-all, or a bit of an ass.

Kate wants to be liked. She is not capable of admitting this to herself, however. Baked goods get foisted on people. Who doesn't like cupcakes and cookies and who doesn't like the bearer of said baked goods?

She also likes it when people listen to her. Kate likes it when people obey her and do as she asks. No one likes bossy boilers. She is very aware of this. It works in direct conflict with her desire to be liked and thought of in a positive manner.

Kate is polite. While she is not frigid or cool, neither is she the warmest of people. She comes across as reserved on first meetings.

Kate is confident in herself as well as in her abilities and knowledge. Too confident, perhaps. She has under estimated how serious some situations are. She has over estimated how useful she can be.

Her personality has not changed much. She's still just as much of a perfectionist. She will still take it upon herself to get things done and be self-sacrificing (in her own head) if need be.

↠ Powers: Kate possesses an accelerated healing factor that allows her to recover from almost any wound and makes her immune to most toxins, poisons, and diseases. She cannot heal around objects that are left in. For example, if she is run through with a sword, the sword must be removed for her to heal. Her healing occurs immediately following said injury. She is not immune to pain. She cannot walk off every injury. If they are bad enough, for all looks and purposes, she will appear to be dead until her body can mend itself.

Through the use of touch she can also aid in the healing of others providing that she remains in contact with them until the wound is healed. She does this by low-level telepathy and urges the body to heal and the cells to regenerate at an extremely quick rate. It is a near complete borrow. When healing someone, she no longer possesses her healing factor. Should she let go (for any reason), her factor will return.

When her powers first emerged, she got headaches when she healed others. She still gets headaches but only when healing more serious injures or trying to heal too many people. At this point, her powers are limited to physical injuries. She cannot heal genetic problems or diseases. Harry Potter would be stuck with his scar.

↠ Abilities: Kate is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. She knows how to do a lot of different things (at least in theory). She can repel and climb, pick locks, organize a rescue mission, go diving and a few other things but she is not what you would call proficient in them. This is not unusual given all of the things that an X-Men has to do on a near daily basis.

Kate also has some first-aid knowledge because while she can heal, it's not always practical to do it on a wide scale. And because her powers are not good in a fight, Kate has studied kick-boxing for a few years now. She's able to defend herself if her opponent has no real skill or doesn't know what he or she is doing.

Kate has the strength level of someone who engages in moderate to heavy physical exercise on a daily basis. She has greater endurance thanks to her advanced healing factor.

↠ Languages: Kate is fluent in Italian, Spanish, French and German.

↠ Reason for Playing This Character: She's a perfectionist in a world that is not perfect. I like to throw her in awkward situations where she thinks she'll succeed and then fail. I really want to put her in the weird situations where she 'knows' people but not really.

↠ What is Your Character's Sin?: Pride.

Kate's sin is pride or rather pride's sister-from-another-mister, vanity. She's not vain like the smurf. She doesn't stare at her own reflection and think she's pretty. It's more subtle than vocalizing it. She doesn't have to say it, she shows it.

It starts with the way she styles herself. Her hair and outfits must be appropriate for the situation. She takes care in putting together her looks and make no mistake, it is a look from top to bottom. Kate dresses to impress. She plans for it due to a deep seeded need to impress.

Her vanity goes beyond her hair and styling, it is in her actions as well. Her projects, whether work related or baking, have to be perfect. To make it worst for people, she knows that she's good.

And because vanity and pride are siblings, Kate is guilty of being outright prideful. She believes that she can do almost anything that she sets her mind to. She believes that she is underrated. There are times when she's correct. Then there are times when she makes an ass out of herself.

SAMPLES
(We ask that at least one of the samples be set in the City of Sin setting, so we can get a good idea of exactly how your character might fit in.)

↠ First Person: [ This is familiar, vaguely familiar in a terrible way. She would rather not have this horrible deja vu but no one asked her. Had they asked her, Kate would have plenty of words for them. It wasn't enough that she be kidnapped from her own dimension once. Oh no. Someone had kidnapped her from her first set of kidnappers.

There was a word for that, unlucky.

Kate looks at the blackberry. She gets it. It is expected that she use it. The device is familiar to her (despite the extra options). Kate doesn't want to. It is a way of announcing that she's new and fresh meat. Maybe she can be clever? ]

Has anyone traveled outside of the City?

[ And there went her attempt at being clever. ]

↠ Third Person: Jeans. Why jeans? Oh, to be certain, she knew the reason. She had been wearing them in Mannaz Hall where there had been no occasion to dress up or a need to dress to impress. She already knew everyone. They had already seen her at her best. Her friends and other Candidates knew she was far from a slob.

Wearing jeans and a flannel shirt was not how she wanted to make her introduction into the City or rather her reintroduction. She had been here before. She had shopped here before, it was where she had bought the jeans in the first place. Kate let out a breath. She had to console herself that at least it wasn't a t-shirt, jeans and something like flip-flops. Kate was dressed presentable and neat. Her button-up shirt, despite the flannel print, was pressed. Her clothing was clean and she knew she was cute but if she had her preferences, she would have felt more comfortable in the outfit she had worn when she first arrived in Gebo. She could have dressed it up or down. The outfit had everything she needed. Plus, her bag. She missed her brown bag. It was bigger on the inside. (No, seriously. Thanks to one Draco Malfoy who had performed on an undetectable extension charm on it.)

Kate let out another little huff and then squared her shoulders. No, it didn't matter how she was dressed. She was confident that she would make a good first impression regardless of the jeans. Again, her mind wandered to her brown and teal skirt. No, no. She shook her head. She had to move past that. There were more important things, truly there were.
